Translation Programme 1èreL LVA

To finish the year, we are going to develop a translation programme with my 1èreL LVA class. Before the Reforms in 2013, our L students had a separate TRANSLATION test in their Baccalauréat exam, worth 6/20 points. I used to love working towards this part of the exam, as I feel translation enables us to work in great deal on many elements of language and culture all at the same time.

We no longer have this part of the exam to prepare, but I have decided to introduce my class to the delights of translating in the final period of the year. Love it or hate – you will not remain indifferent.

Text N°3 to translate : Les taxis londoniens

Courtoisie :

Les chauffeurs de taxi londoniens sont considérés comme les plus sympathiques et les plus avisés. C’est ce qui ressort d’un sondage du voyagiste Expedia, qui a ausculté près de deux mille internautes. Les taxis parisiens et new-yorkais décrochent la palme de la grossièreté. Les critères du classement (où nos taxis figurent qu’en 9^e position, loin derrière les Londoniens, 1ers) tiennent compte de la propreté, la conduite, la connaissance de la ville, l’amabilité et la disponibilité. C’est à Rome que les chauffeurs conduiraient le plus mal.

Des centaines de femmes ont défilé, hier, à New Delhi, pour la première «marche des salopes» organisée en Inde, visant à alerter l’opinion sur une hausse inquiétante du nombre d’agressions sexuelles et l’accroissement de l’insécurité. Selon une étude menée, en 2010, par la municipalité de Delhi, 85% des femmes craignent d’être harcelées et 45% évitent de sortir seules à la nuit tombée.

Think about the order of the words – do not translate without reflecting on the logical order in English.
